They could have made a great 60's anti-drug commercial out of your misfortune; "Because my girlfriend saw fit to partake of the Demon Weed, I missed one of the Great Cultural Events in all of Rock & Roll, Bob Dylan's first electric tour with The Band." (They could have put you behind a screen and electronically altered your voice. It would have been a perfect PSA.)

All kidding aside, it's comments like this one - ten years after the fact of my writing the blog - that makes the time & effort I put into GOWR&R worth it. Thank you.

Coupla random questions; Do you still live in Columbus? And when was the first time you actually got to SEE Bob Dylan?

(And not to rub salt in the wound, but GODDAMN did you miss a great rock & roll show that night in 1965.) I had a chance to meet Bob at my favorite restaurant CharBerts, the day before the concerts. I was already a big fan in part because a roommate who was light on his rent gave me three of Dylan’s albums—I was sold immediately after playing them.
The day of the concert, Connie decided to finally try marijuana for the first time. Bad idea. She flipped out and became paranoid. I had to comfort her for the rest of the evening and we missed the concert! I married her anyway after graduation, but this story still comes up 55 years later….Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2091714924588660529.post-66377167213588542962022-03-29T22:38:41.212-04:002022-03-29T22:38:41.212-04:00The comment above was a sports-betting come-on, so...The comment above was a sports-betting come-on, so I 86'd it. "...lookin for some kid to try and make it work for you like you nine pound hammer did..." or some such thing. Just the way he said, "Tearing up your miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind." Liverpewell 66 is my fave version of this song. I saw Bob in Seattle in Feb. 74 at the arvo show. It was quite energetic.Jonnohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11880995305288978033noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2091714924588660529.post-1296113370414927322017-06-20T08:31:09.152-04:002017-06-20T08:31:09.152-04:00The previous blog comment was removed for personal...The previous blog comment was removed for personal reasons, not because of any problem with content.Ricki C.https://www.blogger.com/profile/04687745258304549097noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2091714924588660529.post-70273661432852920782017-06-19T12:21:09.288-04:002017-06-19T12:21:09.288-04:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator. This Day in Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10349357557944053503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2091714924588660529.post-50925621661311733102013-11-23T14:37:10.788-05:002013-11-23T14:37:10.788-05:00This is so great. (I find blog readers rather astoundingly passive, but then again I'm not on Facebook, so I guess I shouldn't throw stones.)

I had no idea that this show had been postponed from 1963 due to the assassination. From ages 5 to 12 when The Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, all I cared about was World War II. From 12 on it's been rock & roll. I always was an OCD kid. That was why, as I stated in the blog, I wasn't even aware Dylan had ever been a folk singer. That's a rather crucial four year span between our ages. (Music generations turned over a lot faster in the 60's.)

And thank you for your memory of how sparse the crowd was. I knew the show wasn't sold out (or, as I said in the blog, dad couldn't pull me a ticket) but until you mentioned it I didn't recall that the balcony was nearly empty.

Again, thanks for writing. Thanks so much for this post.
I lived in ...Wow! Thanks so much for this post.

I lived in Urbana in the 1960s, and I was supposed to see Bob Dylan for my 15th birthday on November 22, 1963, at Veterans Memorial as a gift. JFK was killed (50 years ago today, in fact), and the concert was cancelled. I finally DID get to see Dylan two years later, on November 19, 1965, as a "rescheduled" appearance.

I found your blog as I searched for information on the "set list" for the concert, since Dylan's official site doesn't even post it. I don't think they tracked song set lists back then. But I remember I loved every song.

I had started listening to Dylan's LPs when he first started with Columbia, and loved the folk songs. It was all new to me. But I loved the new "rock 'n' roll" music, too. So, I loved it when he went electric. I remember sitting there at Vets Memorial, enjoying the opening-half acoustic set. I have often told people the story you remembered about Dylan's "recovering from a slight case of leprosy" comment, and I'm thrilled to see that I didn't mis-remember that moment. :-)

I also remember the "beatniks" as I called them back then getting mad and throwing things and walking out of the concert, upset that Dylan had "sold out." Little did they know that he had changed the world of music TWICE by doing that.

(I also remember at the opening of the concert that Dylan looked at the VERY sparse crowd - there were not many people there at all; several hundred - and he announced, on his stool on the stage (another stool held a glass of water) that "you folks up there in the balcony in the cheap seats can just come on down."

And I - we - all did. I'm 65 today. Officially an old guy. You made my birthday, Ricki C.

Wonderful memories, so many years ago. Thanks again! Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
